Often it is only the mirror glass, which sits on a backing plate inside a housing that came through the knock intact, and that is the job we do. Sometimes the same knock takes the housing, the folding mechanism or the adjustment motor with it, and that is not glazing work. Where the housing survived, the fix is the glass and the backing plate it sits on rather than the whole mirror. The glass clips or bonds onto a plate that carries the adjustment mechanism behind it, and on a heated mirror the element is attached to that same plate with two spade connectors that have to be transferred across. This is much the smaller of the two outcomes, and it is worth establishing before anyone agrees to a full mirror. The glass is ordered for your specific vehicle rather than carried on the van, so allow one to three days from booking for the part to arrive. The fitting itself takes about an hour. There is no adhesive curing time involved, so the mirror is usable as soon as it has been set and tested through its full movement.

When it is the housing or the mechanism, not the glass
This is the distinction most people do not know they need, and it decides who you should be ringing. A modern side mirror is a good deal more than a reflective surface. The housing can carry electric fold, an indicator repeater, a puddle lamp underneath, a blind spot warning light and, on some vehicles, a camera feeding the surround view system. If the housing is cracked, the mirror will not fold, or it no longer responds when you adjust it, then the fault sits in the assembly rather than in the glass. Replacing an assembly is mechanical and electrical work, and the housing normally has to be painted to match the body afterwards. We do not fit mirror assemblies, so that job goes to a mechanical repairer or your dealership. Can just the mirror glass be replaced, or do I need the whole mirror?
Often just the glass, and that is the work we do. The glass sits on a backing plate inside the housing, and a knock that shatters the glass frequently leaves the housing, the motor and the folding mechanism untouched. Do you replace the whole mirror if the housing is broken?
No. We fit mirror glass rather than mirror assemblies. If the housing is cracked, the mirror will not fold, or it no longer moves when you adjust it, the fault is mechanical and electrical rather than glazing, and the housing usually needs painting to match your vehicle as well. Will my heated mirror still work after the glass is replaced?
Yes, provided the correct glass is fitted. On a heated mirror the heating element is attached to the backing plate directly behind the glass and connected by two spade terminals, so heated glass is a different part from plain glass on the same vehicle. Tell us whether yours is heated when you book, since that is what we order against.
Is it illegal to drive with a broken side mirror in New South Wales?
A vehicle has to give the driver a clear view of the traffic beside and behind it, so a mirror that is missing, shattered or hanging off can make the vehicle defectable, and it is dangerous in traffic regardless of enforcement. Get it dealt with rather than relying on the other mirror.
How long does side mirror glass replacement take?
